NIH-funded trials will test pregnenolone for addiction and depression

News-Medical reports that the NIH has funded two planned studies, led by Center for BrainHealth and UT Southwestern investigators, testing whether the neurosteroid pregnenolone can help treat substance use disorders with co-occurring depression. One is a randomized, placebo-controlled trial enrolling 100 participants with alcohol use disorder and major depression; the other, a UG3/UH3 award potentially exceeding $12 million, targets cannabis use disorder. No results yet.

MPS Mathematical Sciences Research Programs (MPS MathSci)

The U.S. National Science Foundation has posted its MPS Mathematical Sciences Research Programs funding opportunity (NSF 26-520). It covers areas from algebra and number theory to statistics, mathematical biology, focused research groups, infrastructure and research training groups. NSF estimates 400 to 600 awards, subject to available funds, and accepts full proposals anytime. An informational webinar is set for October 7, 2026.

Opinion: A political veto over NIH grants could leave East Palestine in the dark

In an opinion piece for The Hill, East Palestine resident Misti Allison argues that a proposed executive order letting an outside committee veto NIH grants on political grounds could undermine long-term environmental health research. She cites NIH-funded work finding HEMA in the urine of 74 percent of residents tested five months after the derailment, versus none in a Marietta comparison group.

Early career oral biology researchers receive NIH funding for disease-oriented projects

University at Buffalo's UBNow reports that two early career oral biology assistant professors, Zhibin Cui and Harim Tavares dos Santos, each received a two-year, $320,000 NIH R03 grant. Cui is testing in transgenic mice whether combined HRAS and CASP8 mutations drive an aggressive tongue cancer. Tavares dos Santos is studying, in mouse models and human samples, whether rare tuft cells play a role in Sjögren's disease.

UC San Diego and University of Vermont Share $19M from NSF to Build National Biological Observatory

UC San Diego Today reports that the National Science Foundation awarded $19 million for a five-year project, led by Davi Bock at the University of Vermont, to design and build a National Connectomics and Ultrastructure Volume Observatory. About $15.68 million goes to UVM and $3.32 million to UC San Diego imaging and computing resources. Four pilot projects will test the proposed design.

$11.7 million from NIH supports research on inflammation in blood cancers

WashU Medicine reports that its investigators received an $11.7 million grant from the NIH's National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to study how inflammation drives myeloproliferative neoplasms, blood cancers at high risk of progressing to acute myeloid leukemia. The award funds four research projects, some using mouse models and human samples, on different inflammatory pathways, plus three shared cores for administration, biospecimens and pathology, and bioinformatics.
